This car has an H suffix to its engine number. Can anyone tell me what does that mean?

2009-07-14 16:17:25 | Tim B. writes:

Hi John. After Dec 1970 the letters H (High), S (Standard), or L (Low) replace -9 -8 or -7 (compresion ratio) as engine number suffix.

Thanks Tim. I had figured the meaning of the H, but could not find any information about its use on E Type engines.

Advertised on carsales.com.au 9 July 2014, asking AUS$70,000. Advert' says 99,000 klms. Described as follows: "In excellent original condition inside and out, with sensible improvements, this classic is a joy to own and drive. Improvements include after-market air-conditioning, aluminium radiator, permanent magnet CoolCat fans (runs at normal temperature even at 40 degrees ambient), ceramic coated exhaust manifolds (rather than the flake-prone vitreous enamel originals), stainless steel exhausts (to original pattern), braided stainless flexible brake lines, near new Pirelli Scorpion tyres.
A Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust heritage certificate, workshop manual, some new parts and most of the replaced original parts are available.
First delivered in Cardiff, Wales, the car was imported into Australia early in the 1980s so far as can be ascertained. It has had just three owners since then."

I was the lucky (?) one that bought the car sight unseen from the Shannon's auction. Sadly the previous owner Christian Willing died in 2021 after a year-long illness, and his widow Helen, although loving the car, has made a clean break from this past. The car is now resident in Glenelg, a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. The CarSales description is accurate, as was a similar description for the Shannon's auction. but there are numerous things that need to be 'fixed', mostly of a (hopefully) minor nature.

Christian had done quite a lot of research on the car's life in Australia, and I will endeavour to upload that when time permits.

The date that it came to Australia is still uncertain, and I am not sure that the registration plates are totally correctly allocated at the moment. Current indicated mileage is 97,308 (kms) However this MAY be a combination of miles during its UK ownership, and kms in Australia.

For some reason city is still showing as Hobart, and I can't find a field to change that, which I am sure I could before. Should be 'Glenelg, Adelaide' South Australia.

The car has been a delight to drive, and the ODO now reads 2,000kms, so 5,000kms in 3 years. First up was new tyres as the originals were time-expired and new battery. Changed the dash and inside lights to LED's. Air-conditioning has been serviced and operates very well making it a pleasant year round drive. LH adjustable side-mirror added. New door lock mechanisms added to both doors. In Oct24, the engine and drivetrain were removed to replace the clutch, universal joints in the driveshaft, new front and rear engine seals, and numerous other seals in the gearbox and engine. SU carbies were reconditioned, and as the battery was underperforming, it too was replaced. New shock absorbers fitted all-round. It drives like a new car.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
