At launch in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type was a sensation. Employing monocoque construction, independent suspension and disc brakes all round, the new supercar was clothed in aerodynamic bodywork and powered by the already well proven XK motor, initially of 3.8 and, from 1964, of 4.2-litre capacity. The 1971 S3 gained an even more torquey 5343cc 272bhp V12.
This 1972-built Series 3 E-Type returned home from the USA in 1989 as a left-hand drive 2+2 fixed head in white, being purchased by English Classic Cars to be totally rebuilt into a right-hand drive open roadster. Correspondence on file reveals that everything was removed, right down to the bulkhead, with new body built up from all new panels supplied by refurbishment specialists Martin Robey. We read that new and exchange mechanicals were fitted throughout, including a Getrag 5-speed gearbox and a 6.3-litre power unit supplied by Forward Engineering's Ron Beatty.
Following this rebuild, HWK 927L was looked after by well known E Type experts David Marks of Nottingham and Barry Hodgson of Twyford, and was only driven on sunny days as well as taking part in such events as the annual RAC-AXA rally. We are told that, currently, the roadster is said still to be immaculate in British Racing Green with tan interior. It is claimed that the 12-cylinder burns no oil, which is fully synthetic, and returns 220 miles per tank of lead-free 4-star. The MOT is current until next March
