If anyone knows why the engine number ends in "H" rather than "9" I'd like to know why. I've seen tens of thousands of E-types and never have seen an H for compression ratio.

This 1971 Jaguar XKE is a Series II roadster that was produced in September 1970 and originally distributed in the US by British Leyland of New York. The car is finished in British Racing Green over Biscuit leather upholstery and powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes a black soft top, air conditioning, a Retrosound stereo, knock-off 15″ wire wheels, and Cool Cat electric fans. It was acquired by the seller in 2014, and work performed in the last two years included rebuilding the tachometer, distributor, and steering rack, as well as adjusting the valves and replacing the water pump, clutch assembly, exhaust system, tires, and shocks. This Series II XKE roadster is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, service records from current ownership, and New York registration in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the car is believed to have been repainted and the bumpers re-chromed under previous ownership. Features include a black soft top along with a driver-side mirror, a vented hood, triple windshield wipers, and bumper overriders. Paint chips and areas of touch-up are visible in the gallery, along with corrosion in the spare tire well and a cracked front badge.

Knock-off 15″ wire wheels are finished in chrome and wrapped in 205/65 Vredestein Quatrac tires that were mounted in December 2021. The steering rack was rebuilt in January 2021, at which time the wheel bearings were tightened and the radius arm, upper control arm, and sway bar bushings were replaced along with the tie rod gaiters and shocks. The brake master cylinder was replaced in May 2020.

The cabin is trimmed in Biscuit leather and the interior materials were refreshed in 2015, which included reupholstering the armrest and center console along with replacing the seat covers, foam padding, and door armrests. The blower motor assembly was replaced in 2016, while the ignition switch and shift knob were replaced and repairs were made to the under-dash wiring in January 2021. Amenities include air conditioning, a Retrosound stereo, three-point seatbelts, and Jaguar-branded rubber floor mats. Aftermarket sound deadening insulation has been added to the floors.

A wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline, and centrally-mounted auxiliary gauges. An electronic tachometer was installed in 2015 and green LED backlights have been added to the auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 50k miles, approximately 7k 0f which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, Cool Cat electric fans, and a stainless steel exhaust system. The starter and distributor were rebuilt in 2021 by Growler Restorations of Cleveland, Ohio, and additional work performed that year included polishing the exhaust heat shields, installing a stainless steel exhaust system, and replacing the oil pan seal along with the carburetor fuel bowl floats, jets, and gaskets. The water pump, engine mounts, and heater hoses were replaced in May 2020, while the timing chain adjuster and throttle bushing were replaced in 2015. The stripped drain pan plug noted in a receipt in the gallery is said to have been repaired.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The clutch assembly and transmission shaft seals were replaced and the flywheel was resurfaced in May 2020. The transmission and differential oils were changed in 2021, while the clutch hydraulic cylinders were replaced in 2016.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of September 29, 1970, along with factory serial numbers and colors.
