This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive, flat-floor Series I coupe that was completed on November 17, 1961 and delivered to its first owner in Belvedere, California. The car was acquired by its current owner, a Jaguar collector and restorer, in 1990, and a restoration in original Opalescent Gunmetal over red leather commenced in 2011. Power is from a rebuilt matching-numbers 3.8L inline-six that is fed by triple carburetors and paired with a four-speed manual transmission from a later XKE. Additional features include replacement chrome wire wheels, a mix of replated and new brightwork, a period Stromberg-Carlson radio, and more. This XKE is offered on dealer consignment with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, records from current ownership, its removed stock transmission, and a clean Oregon title.

The car was repainted in 2012, reportedly using its original color of Opalescent Gunmetal. The rear bumper ends and guards were rechromed, while new brightwork includes the front bumpers, rain gutter trim, taillight bezels, and reverse light housing. The bumper mounts, spacers, and body rubber were also replaced.

New chrome knock-off wire wheels with two-eared spinners and 185-section Vredestein Sprint Classic tires were mounted in 2012. The four-wheel disc brake system features inboard rotors at the rear. Rebuilt calipers and a resleeved master cylinder were fitted in 2011 and 2012 along with new rotors and pads.

The cabin was reupholstered in red leather with a gray headliner using a kit from BAS Ltd., and features rebuilt low-back roadster-style seats, a two-piece rear mat, and aluminum center console trim. The bezel around the Stromberg-Carlson radio was rechromed by Oregon Plating Co., as were the speaker trim rings and shifter surrounds. Replacement components consist of the shift knob, seatbelts, toggle switch ends, and more.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer with a replacement angle drive and a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline. Approximately 52k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, 20k of which were added by the current owner. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six was rebuilt in 2011 with an .040″ overbore, a sleeve on cylinder #3, and installation of new main bearings and Mahle 9:1 pistons. The cylinder head was fitted with new bronze valve guides, exhaust valves, and hardware. The triple SU carburetors were rebuilt, and additional replacement components included the timing chains, gaskets, exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, header tank, chrome underhood hardware, and more as detailed on included invoices.

Engine number R2740-9 corresponds to the data plate in the engine bay and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate.

Shifting is through a four-speed manual transmission sourced from a later 4.2-liter car, and the selling dealer reports that the stock transmission is included. A new clutch disc, pilot bushing, and throw-out bearing were fitted in 2011 along with resleeved master and slave cylinders. A new fuel tank and rear suspension fulcrums were installed in 2012.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate shows the original colors and driveline numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates.

Manufactured on 17th November 1961 and despatched to Jaguar Cars, New York on 2nd December, this flat-floor Jaguar presents in good all round condition having benefitted from a significant amount of restoration work. The Gunmetal paintwork is in good order as is the leather interior. The 3.8 litre engine runs well and with good oil pressure. The gearbox changes smoothly and the car certainly drives with alacrity. These iconic cars of the 60’s always create interest and one such as this flat-floor example will always have that added bit of desirability especially with this being the year that celebrates 60 years of the Jaguar E-type. Good quality Series I Coupés are rare and highly sought after; this example certainly falls into that category.

Opening the door and stepping inside is akin to sitting inside a time-capsule. The relative-snug nature of an E-Type cabin compared to modern vehicles, feels every bit luxurious and endorphin-boosting as it was in 1961. This is all thanks to the no-expense-spared nature and commitment of the previous owners and their passion for this car. The red leather seats have also been re-upholstered in 2012 and have no tears. 

The interior of this XKE really has had no expense spared, and it shows when you first take in the intricate detail of this vintage cabin. Glance over to the period-correct and updated Stomberg-Carlson radio and you’ll see that the surrounding chrome has been removed and polished. The switches, gear knobs and other interior parts such as seatbelts have all been replaced too and the dials have also been replaced with a 160mph Smiths speedometer and a 5.5k rev-counter. The mileage shows at just under 52,500 however please note that this cannot be verified. 

The Exterior 

The opalescent gunmetal paintwork over-red interior is a mouth-watering proposition. Even more so thanks to a full-body respray 10 years ago in its production colour. 

Furthermore, all exterior bumpers have been removed, re-chromed and re-applied with all casings, guttering and light housings plus more all having been replaced too. 

Tasteful chrome wire wheels have also been applied to finish the tasteful and period-correct look of this flat-floor Series 1. 

The Mechanics 

The matching-numbers 3.8L six-cylinder originating from the infamous XK150S has been removed, rebuilt, and paired with a four-speed manual from a later E-type all during the ’11-’12 restoration. Work undertaken includes new main bearings, a sleeve on cylinder 3 and Mahle 9:1 Pistons. New bronze valve guides and exhaust valves have also been applied.

All three carburettors have been removed, rebuilt and re-applied, as well as replacement parts such as manifolds, engine mounts, timing chain, header tank and more – all documented within the various invoices. 

The engine roars into life on the button, with no rattles or noises of concern. 

The Paperwork 

The car is accompanied with a rich history from its 60 year life, including its Jaguar Daimler heritage certificate awarded in 2014. Please note that the car is awaiting its UK registration however this has been applied for. 

The original service book and operating manual will also be supplied upon sale.
