Sellers description:
This 3.8 Liter Jaguar convertible is a prime candidate for a complete restoration or with new paint and interior, it would be a great driver. The car belonged to the brother of a dear friend that inherited it from his Dad. The Dad had bought it used about 30 years ago. The car was last registered about 15 years ago although the son has kept it running and made some upgrades in recent years. I am a friend of the previous owners family and a Jag owner ( I have a 67 E-type and an XK-8) I bought the car from the son in late August 2015.
I have applied for the JDHT certificate but I can tell you that the car has the proper original engine, transmission and body. The car has been resprayed a bronze 25 years ago. I believe the original color was gray. The interior seats, door panels and carpets need replacing. The engine runs strong and has equal compression in all 6 cylinders. Note: I believe the engine has the 9:1 compression as the number ends with the -9 suffix. The transmission works well and the car is completely drivable although either the exhaust system is bad or has a leak as there is excessive noise coming from it. The car has a modern starter and alternator and the K-Tronic ignition. All original parts go with the car if you want to replace these upgrades.
The top is serviceable but should be replaced. I looked under the car for rust damage but I do not see any evidence of it. All Jags have it so I am sure it is there, but I'll have to wait until the car is dismantled to know the actual condition. The car has been in covered storage for the last 20 or so years.
The exhaust system is an aftermarket performance unit and I think it needs to be replaced with the original type unit. Headlight covers with chrome trim rings are not installed but in the car.
I am offering the car as a buy it now as-is. Please do not ask my reserve as I am not telling anyone. Just give me your best bid and let's see where we stand.
If I get my reserve price, I will sell it. If I do not, I'll spend the next 6 mos having the car restored to "superior driver 3+" condition and sell it next spring for $50-75k more than today. Title is free and clear.
I can suggest several Jag mechanics in the DFW area if you want to have it inspected.
