This is a strange car. It clearly has a Series 2 interior. Why would someone do this as it would almost certainly reduce the market value of the car. Perhaps it is the result of a major collision repair or car fire repair?
2006-11-03 23:34:02 | Roger writes:
If I had to hazard a guess, it was probably restored some time ago. At some point, all the 4.2 stuff would have seemed whiz-bangy and the original interior tired and dated. Maybe the owner needed a new interior and engine rebuild in '72 and his local wrecking yard had a totalled '69 with otherwise good interior and engine for $200?

Current bid $26,100 reserve not met, 5 bids, 6 days left in auction. Car now said to be in Costa Mesa, California.
Some good pictures in this auction, Clearly as has been mentioned above its an odd car. It has all the features of a '68 except the engine, the rest of the engine compartment is '68 or S2, including the gas strut to hold the bonnet. Wheels are later style, the hood/top is from a later car (1 missing bow), as is the obvious dash and interior. I see nothing to suggest this car is a '63 except for the VIN, motor and bonnet. It would appear that either the car is a '63 that nearly met with death and was brought back from a later donor or the reverse. Its a pretty car but certainly a mixed bag of parts.

Description from above auction:
Sale: 2219
Location: Salon Rétromobile, Paris
Date: 8 Feb 2013 14:00
Lot 405
1963 JAGUAR TYPE E SERIE 1 CABRIOLET 4,2 LITRES
French title
Chassis # 879080
- Version Series 1, very desirable
- In very good condition
- Hard-top, ideal for winter
The convertible E Type 4.2 litre that we offer was purchased in 2009 by current owner, a professional who specializes in cars of this category in the region of Bordeaux. The meter then showed 34,707 miles, or 55,854km. The car came from California, where it must have seen cast happy days in a very suitable climate, before receiving a complete restoration that has given the car mechanical reliability. Its owner says that its recent consumption of oil did not exceed even one liter per 2,500km, of which at least 1,500km was on mountain roads. For four years, the car received detailed improvements such as the replacement of the rubber seals (for the headlights, the doors, the bumper) and boot struts. Bills are there to attest to all this. The car has its kit tools, spare wheel with chrome spokes and the counter currently displays 36,315 miles or 58,442km. In a very elegant light blue hue, the car is equipped with navy blue upholstery complemented by a dark blue hood. This combination of colours suits the car wonderfully. It is also equipped with a removable hard-top in ivory shade, perfect for the winter months. In beautiful condition this very desirable Series 1, with its elegant head lights in Perspex, will provide its new owner the joy of open-top driving with the power and sound of one of the finest post-war English automobiles.
Estimation 70 000 - 90 000 €
Sold for 83,395 €

car sold 111,532 in France. I can not believe anyone would buy this car after reading the above description, then inspecting the car. Something is wrong here. Either the entire car was rebuilt with a 4.2 doner car or a 3.8 vin was placed on this car early in its life. How about a Heritage certificate to explain it. I feel bad for the new owner.
