Auction description:
Lot 393
1961 Jaguar Type E série 1 Roadster 'plancher plat'
Sold for €195,500 (US$ 267,835) inc. premium
Chassis no. 876188
Engine no. R 2678-9
Body no. R 2476
Its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate confirms that left-hand drive chassis number '876188' was despatched from the Browns Lane factory on 12th December 1961 bound for Jaguar Cars, New York. It was registered prior to despatch and thus had a Coventry number ('472 WK'), these factory registrations being highly prized by British Jaguar enthusiasts. Originally finished in Carmen Red with black leather interior and matching hood - its present livery - the car was first owned by one J R Clitheroe of Palatine, Illinois, who had purchased it as a 'personal export'. It retains matching numbers (even the body tag is still in place).
Purchased by the current owner March 2012, the E-Type is offered fresh from a full 'last nut and bolt' restoration to 'A1+' standard by RH Classics of Twyford, Leicestershire that involved more than 2,000 hours work over the last 20 months. Any bodywork repairs were leaded in the traditional way rather than using modern fillers, and particular attention was paid to originality, even down to restoring the original plastic air ducts and switches rather than replacing them with new or pattern parts. The seats and hood were re-trimmed by acknowledged experts Suffolk & Turley, and the original wire wheels restored to the factory-correct painted finish. The only modifications from factory specification are a stainless steel exhaust system and radial tyres (Dunlop SP, the correct radial option for the E-Type). Restoration receipts totalling in excess of £100,000 (approximately €121,000) and a full photographic record of the restoration (on CD-ROM) come with the car, which also comes with an owner's manual and UK V5C registration document.
