Coachwork : Roadster, red with black leather interior

This European Series 1 flat floor roadster appears to be an extremely good example of this classic sports car with an original odometer reading of only 76,800 km. The car benefited from a ground up restoration after long term storage. This was carried out by a Dutch marque specialist in the Nineties.
Since then the Jaguar has been with the present owner who professionally stored it and kept it well tuned. At a recent inspection by a Christie's specialist the car started immediately when cold and the engine pulled strongly when warm. The brightwork on the car is in very good shape and the panel fit is straight.

Car to be at auction 2/13
www.bonhams.com/auctions/20924/lot/567/

Auction description:
7 Feb 2013 16:30 CET Paris, The Grand Palais
Cars
Lot 567
1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8-Litre Hardtop Competition Roadster
Chassis no. 875804
Engine no. R1288-8

The E-Type competition car offered here is an early left-hand drive 'flat floor' model. When the E-Type was first introduced there were complaints from taller drivers that the interior was somewhat lacking in space, a criticism addressed by the introduction of foot wells (and other, more minor modifications) early in 1962. A purchase receipt on file shows that this car was acquired by the current owner in December 2007, while numerous invoices record the details of its restoration and conversion to competition specification circa 2008, most of the work being carried out by Euro-Classics (Franz Dekkers) of Essen. There is also a comprehensive photographic record of the rebuild.

Noteworthy features include 4-pot front brake callipers, gas shock absorbers, aluminium flooring and dashboard centre panel, Dunlop-style knock-off wheels, leather bonnet/boot straps and a ventilated aluminium boot lid. Eligible for a wide variety of historic motor sports events, the car that has recently participated in the historic Targa Florio, is described as in excellent race-prepared condition and offered with the aforementioned invoices and FIA Historic Technical Passport (Class: GTS 7; Period: E 1947-1961).
Estimate:
€90,000 - 120,000
£73,000 - 98,000
US$ 120,000 - 160,000
Chassis no. 875804
Engine no. R1288-8

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
