Ad seen in Collector Car Trader, 2/2003. Ad reads:

1961 JAGUAR E-TYPE, 1961 JAGUAR E-TYPE ROADSTER CHASSIS# 875100, ENGINE# R1143-9, BODY# R1082, GEARBOX# EB243JS THIS E-TYPE WAS MANUFACTURED DURING THE FIRST TWO MONTHS OF THE MODEL’S MASS PRODUCTION AND FEATURES FLAT FLOORS, WELDED LOUVERS AND THE EXTERNAL BONNET SECURING LOCKS OPERATED BY A T-HANDLE. THAT WAS A FEATURE OF THE FIRST 383 CARS TO LEAVE THE FACTORY. THIS CAR, CHASSIS NUMBER 875100, IS THE 100TH LEFTHAND-DRIVE ROADSTER PRODUCED. COMPLETED IN OCTOBER 2000, THIS CAR’S COMPLETE FRAME-UP RESTORATION WAS UNDERTAKEN BY RENOWNED JAGUAR MARQUE SPECIALIST, DAVID FERGUSON, OF CAMPBELL, CALIFORNIA, FROM IT’S ORIGINAL OWNER IN A COMPLETE, BUT DETERIORATED CONDITION. THIS CAR WAS DISMANTLED AND ATTACHED TO A FRAME ROTISSERIE WHERE THE BODY AND CHASSIS WERE BEAD BLASTED, STRAIGHTENED AND RE-SPRAYED. EVERY PANEL OF THE BONNET WAS SEPARATED, RE-SPRAYED AND RE-ASSEMBLED ON A SPECIAL ALIGNMENT JIG. THE ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN WERE COMPLETELY REBUILT AND RE-PAINTED TO CAREFULLY RESEARCHED ORIGINAL FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS. FINAL ASSEMBLY WAS COMPLETED WITH PAINSTAKING ATTENTION TO DETAIL, ORIGINAL NEW OLD STOCK COMPONENTS UNIQUE TO THESE EARLY E-TYPES WERE TRACKED DOWN ACROSS THE COUNTRY. A COMPLETE TOOLKIT, TOGETHER WITH A JACK, WAS RESTORED FOR THE BOOT. THIS E-TYPE HAD MANY RARELY ENCOUNTERED DETAILS BECAUSE OF ITS EARLY PRODUCTION NUMBER AND HAS BEEN RESTORED CORRECTLY IN EVERY WAY. THE CAR WAS FINISHED IN CREAM WITH RED LEATHER INTERIOR AND A TAN HOOD. AFTER COMPLETION, THE CAR WAS SOLD TO ITS PRESENT OWNER IN MEXICO, A TRUE JAGUAR CONNOISSEUR, WHO OWNS SEVERAL RESTORED EARLY JAGUARS. AN ACCOMPANYING JAGUAR HERITAGE TRUST CERTIFICATE, PREPARED FOR THE PRESENT OWNER, RECORDS THAT THE CAR WAS SOLD NEW IN SAN FRANCISCO, AND CONFIRMS THAT IT WAS A GENUINE MATCHING NUMBERS CAR.

Sellers comment:
1961 JAGUAR E-TYPE ROADSTER
Crème with Red leather interior and Tan convertible top. This particular E-Type is one of the earliest cars manufactured. It was produced during the E-Types first two months of production. This being the 100th left hand drive example of the first 383 E-Types produced, it thus features flat floors, welded bonnet louvers and external T-handle bonnet latches. Chassis # 875100 had only one previous owner prior to restoration. The extensive and proper frame off/rotisserie restoration was completed in October of 2000 by Jaguar specialist, Dave Ferguson of Campbell, California. The body and chassis were bead blasted, straightened and resprayed. The engine and drivetrain were completed rebuilt and repainted to original factory specifications. Final assembly was completed with painstaking attention to detail. Original new old stock components unique to this early series have been sourced from around the world. This matching numbers E-Type (Chassis: 875100, Engine: R1143-0, Body: R1082, Gearbox: EB243JS) has been restored exceptionally and correctly in every way down to the complete factory tool kit and jack. Since restoration this Jaguar has been part of an extensive collection. It is currently offered with Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate to confirm its first sale to San Francisco, California as well as its matching numbers. Absolutely exceptional in every way, this E-Type must be considered one of the best if not the best early flat floor examples in the world.

The Champion Spark Plugs ad just posted to this page does not show 875100. The very early roadster in the Sept. 1961 ad is believed to be the cream-coloured New York Show car 875002, which was still retained by Jaguar Cars NY for publicity purposes at the time this ad would have been produced.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
