Auction description:
The Jaguar Legend, Coys (18th June 2005)
Overview
The example we are delighted to offer here is chassis number 860011, the eleventh right hand drive fixedhead Coupe produced. Retained by Jaguar for 12 months the car spent most of its early life in Henley's London showroom at 88 Piccadilliy W1, where it was used a demonstrator. Now in private hands, the current owner recalls youthful hours with his face pressed against Henley's showroom glass fantasising about the E Type. So it was with great excitement that when the car was offered for sale in 1997 he had the opportunity to purchase it. Remarkably the car retains many of its original components most notably its engine and gearbox, and comes with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Certificate stating the numbers. It is understood that the Webasto sunroof was fitted to the car later during its life and there is a small history file with the car containing the original buff log book and old service and maintainence bills. In recent years the car has received the fitment of a Kenlowe cooling fan and a new steering rack, and is reported to be in good general order. 847 FCD is also supplied with the current V5 log book and a new MoT.

Car sold for £22,584 at auction to somebody who looked like a dealer ! Car was in condition 2 with surface rust in many places, and badly fitting bonnet. Mechanics looked tired. A rubber plaque in the engine bay listed the car as the one which was on display at Henleys in 1961. Not sure how old the plaque was or when it was put in the engine.

This car is mentioned in a letter to "Jaguar Driver" magazine April 1982 by the then owner, Mark Shackell of Tendring Essex, in which he states that the car was at Henlys of Piccadilly showroom for a year and was then returned to the factory to have certain modifications prior to going to the first owner at a Park Lane London address. Unfortunately no further details are given!
