Car was at auction 9/10

Auction description:
Auction Date: 25 September 2010
Lot 50 - 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Roadster
* Registration: DSU 377
* Chassis Number: 850202
* Engine Number: R6666-9
* Odometer reading: 20835
* Estimate: £65,000-£75,000
* Hammer: Sold
* Plus Commission: £61,462.50
Chassis number 85202 was supplied to its first owner, a Mr. J. H. Lawson of Newcastle Upon Tyne, from Glovers of Ripon on the 23rd October 1961 in its current colour of British Racing Green. It was purchased by the vendor in 1999 from Oxley Threads, who had preserved the vehicle in dehumidified storage following a nut and bolt restoration in 1990. Between 1990 and 1999 the E-Type hardly turned a wheel other than for periodic servicing and cleaning. For the last eleven years it has been used and enjoyed in Spain and England as part of a small collection of classic cars.
In 2006 the vendor commissioned a professional refurbishment opting for sensible upgrades allowing the vehicle to cope with 21st century motoring without spoiling its originality and patina. In the past four years DSU377 has been treated to Coopercraft front calipers, aluminum radiator with integral electric fan, new brass header tank,
Luminition electronic ignition, and high torque starter
Dyno/Alternator.
In addition to these improvements from the standard specification, the following has recently been carried out by Marque specialists: a respray in original British Racing Green,
retrimmed seats,
new floormats,
new door hinges,
new rubber seals,
new hood,
new hood cover and a complete cylinder head rebuild.
This most desirable of flatfloor E-Type Jaguars is supplied with its original Moss gearbox and is described by the vendor as in "excellent condition throughout, being tight and rattle free, it can be driven any distance with confidence." With the imminent 50th anniversary of the E-Type in 2011, this car represents a sound investment opportunity and would be a sure crowd pleaser at any event lucky enough to have it.

1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8-Litre Roadster Add to Favorites
£130,000 - £160,000 GBP
Chassis No. 850202
Engine No. R6666-9
Registration UK V5
Location London, United Kingdom
An early production Series I car and desirable “flat floor” model, bearing a low sequence chassis number
Finished in its original hue of British Racing Green over a Suede Green interior; thought to be one of just 48 right-hand-drive Series I Roadsters to wear the colour from new
Acquired by the consigning owner from Arun, the independent Jaguar dealer in Pulborough, in September 2011
Benefits from extensive restoration work that includes an engine rebuild and interior refit in 2016, gearbox rebuild in 2020, further to a bare metal respray and further restoration in 2022
Restoration work verified by invoices on file with work mostly carried out by Twyford Moors Garage and Mark Taylor Rolls-Royce & Bentley
Offered with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate with workshop invoices and MoT certificates dating to the 1990s
The example offered here is noted by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) certificate to have left the factory in right-hand drive, finished in British Racing Green over a Suede Green interior with a black soft-top roof, and was sent to supplying dealer Gerald Fleming Ltd, Redcar, Yorkshire, in October 1961. Importantly, this early example boasts the desirable flat-floor configuration.
The car underwent a comprehensive restoration in the early 1990s, conducted by classic car specialist D. & S. Gardner, prior to another more recent refurbishment and upgrade programme in 2006. Upgrades included Coopercraft front brake callipers, an aluminium radiator with integral electric fan, a brass header tank, Lumenition electronic ignition, and high torque starter motor. At this point the car was also repainted once more in its original British Racing Green hue, the seats were retrimmed, the cylinder head rebuilt, and the mats, door hinges, rubber seals, soft-top roof, and cover were all replaced. In September 2011, the E-Type was acquired by the consigning owner from Arun, the independent Jaguar dealer based in Pulborough, West Sussex. In their care, the Jaguar has been subject to an engine rebuild and interior refit in 2016, gearbox rebuild in 2020, further to a bare metal respray and further restoration in 2022. The consignor claims to have driven the car no more than 2,000 miles since the engine rebuild and less than 100 miles since it was painted.
This example is accompanied by a history file containing historic MoTs, invoices from its 1990s restoration, and a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate issued in 2024. Given this car’s early provenance, it will be of interest to marque collectors.
