I was asked to view this car, which I was told has been sitting in a wooden garage for five or six years. The vehicle was being offered for $23K Cdn (owner dropped to $18K Cdn). Prospective buyers passed it up. (March 2005) Clearly, it needs a lot of help ... perhaps $10,000 spent on it, plus a LOT of love. Ideal find for someone who's good working on engines, etc. Car is definitely a repaint (deep metalic maroon). Furthermore, the original colour under bonnet may be primrose yellow, with regency red apparently original colour on tub. Also, car is licenced as a 1972, but all of the Build Plate numbers suggest a car that was built around May 1971. Never got a change to visit a second time to check the actual number on the engine to see if it matched the Build Plate. Due to the possible mystery with the '72 licence and early '71 Built Plate numbers, plus the apparent primrose yellow front/regency red rear ... there is the possibility this car may be built up from parts.

This 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series III 2+2 was acquired by the seller in 2011 as a non-running project and subsequently fitted with a 6.0-liter V12 and a replacement four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Additional work included performing bodywork, rebuilding the clutch cylinders, and replacing the wiring harness, carpets, and brake components. The car is fitted with a limited-slip differential, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, Biscuit leather upholstery, a Pyle head unit, aftermarket speakers, and air conditioning. This Series III E-Type is now offered in Canada with the removed engine and gearbox, spare parts, and Ontario registration listing the car as a 1972 model.
The car was finished in its current shade of burgundy under prior ownership. The seller reports that work under current ownership included welding steel floor panels in place, patching an area of the trunk floor, and brazing replacement tubing on the front of the frame to repair rust damage. Evidence of prior repairs to the rear of the car and areas of body filler around the car are noted. A chrome trim piece for the left headlight is missing, the windshield wipers blades are incorrect for the car and not secured, and chipping and cracking are shown in the gallery below. Weatherstripping for the doors and rear hatch was replaced following the seller’s acquisition.
Wire-spoke 15″ wheels are secured with knock-off spinners and mounted with 205/70 Kumho KH16 tires. The spare does not fit due to the location of the fuel pump. The seller states that the master cylinder and brake booster were rebuilt along with the brake calipers that are equipped with stainless-steel pistons, while the brake rotors and pads have been replaced. Polyurethane front suspension bushings and replacement ball joints and boots are reportedly fitted.
The 2+2 cabin houses front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in Biscuit leather. Interior work under current ownership has reportedly included replacing the ignition cylinder and covering the floors with POR-15, sound-dampening material, and replacement wool carpets. A Pyle head unit, aftermarket speakers, and air conditioning are equipped. The dashboard indicator light for the right turn signal does not work, the replacement vinyl upholstery is loose, there is a crack in the dashboard vinyl, and the seller states that the headliner and sun visors need to be replaced.
Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline. Readouts for voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level are mounted in the center stack. The clock does not work. The five-digit odometer shows 77k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership.
The 6.0-liter V12 was reportedly sourced from a 1994 XJ12 and installed in 2012. Additional components utilized from the donor engine include the oil pan, oil cooler, oil pump pickup, flywheel, and water pump. The thermostat, gaskets, hoses, coolant header tank, alternator, air conditioning components, and seals were replaced at that time and the fuel tank was cleaned and treated with POR-15. Additional equipment includes a spin-on oil filter, electric radiator fans, a gear-reduction starter, a Lucas electronic ignition system, a Megasquirt fuel-injection management system, and a Painless Wiring fuse block and harness. Noted flaws include an oil leak from the engine, a noisy fuel pump, and an exhaust smell in the cabin.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement four-speed manual transmission that was reportedly sourced from a sedan and installed under current ownership. The overdrive unit is activated by a dash-mounted switch and operates in fourth gear only. Additional work reportedly included rebuilding the clutch cylinders and replacing the U-joints.
The removed engine and gearbox will accompany the car along with spare parts.
The car does not have a title as it is registered in a province that does not issue titles for cars. It is being sold on its Ontario registration.
