The vendor believes that this 1971 Series III RHD V12 Automatic fixed-head was delivered new to South Africa. He acquired the car in 2003 from Cape Town, the car having been previously looked after by Mowbrays, a well-known local vehicle specialist.

On its return to the UK, the engine was swapped for a 5.7-litre Forward Engineering-tuned V12 that had previously been fitted to a manual Roadster which didn't suit its tumultuous power delivery. This work was carried out by Ron Lightfoot, who the vendor tells us did some work for Steve McQueen at one stage on one of his classic Jaguars.

The vendor contacted Ron Beaty of Forward Engineering before he died, who recalled that the 5.7-litre engines produced something like 350bhp. Beaty subsequently joined forces with Lister to create the V12 Lister Jaguar, a version of which was later used to power the mighty Lister Storm, but that's another story.

The car was then used for a brief period before being put into storage and was last MOTd in 2011. The body remains in sound condition, no doubt thanks to its life in sunny South Africa, and the engine should be back up and running in time for the sale. The car will require four new tyres for its MOT and some gentle recommissioning before being used in anger.

A most interesting vehicle, the vendor is unable to confirm if the indicated 50,000 miles is genuine as there is sadly little paperwork other than the V5C to accompany the car. This is essentially a sound Series III Auto fitted with a monster of an engine - anyone familiar with the work of Ron Beaty and Forward Engineering will understand its appeal straight away.

AMENDMENT; The vendor advises us that the car has just passed its MOT with just a few minor advisories resulting from its period off the road, adding that it drove to the MOT station well and runs and idles smoothly.
