Ebay item 8/18/05
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-E-Type-Coupe-Steal-this-Ultimate-Rust-Free-XKE-Co ...
Current bid $9,700, no reserve, 3 bids, 6 days left in auction.

Sellers description:
this particularly rare offering from Paul’s Jaguar, which gives a new meaning to the words “barn-find” …….and will be sold with No Reserve!

This remarkable time-warp Jaguar is maybe better than we can describe without running out of superlatives; the story behind this fine manual E-Type is as follows…... It was purchased in California by its second owner in 1973, and was driven occasionally until 1985. At that time, with the owner about to relocate within that state, the XKE was readied for the move and loaded into a shipping container. The move took place, but the owner, an admitted packrat, never got around to emptying the container for another 20 years.....when he moved one more time to Florida.

It is so authentic that it still has its 1985 California tag from when it was last registered! Our involvement with the car was brought about when we were asked to get it running… More of what we did in that process is detailed below – this included ultimately buying the car from that same owner who, having stored the car for twenty years, realized he wasn’t going to miss it.

As you might expect, the car now runs and drives, but it's the condition of the body which will set this E-Type apart from just about any others. We are very familiar with the climate in the California's central valley, where this vehicle was keps - it's tough to imagine an XKE body this good unless you've seen another genuine California classic from this region.

E-Type enthusiasts will know that so many of these cars are offered for sale with much “just needs” when it comes to rust repair, with a list of rusted areas. On this offering, there’s no need for any such list…. it’s absolutely rust free throughout – more on the body below….. The engine appears pretty much original and unmolested, still with the rare heat shields in place – the mileage is confirmed genuine at 64,701, as of today.

In each section of the following descriptions we have attempted to cover every area that needs attention – we don’t pretend that this car is perfect. It does however represent surely the very best E-Type value today – very little work will produce an excellent everyday driver, or form the basis for a fabulous show car…….. remember, there are those in the know who believe the lines of the XKE Coupe define motoring in its purest art form – more practical and roomy than the Roadster, and so much smoother than the more bulbous and less popular 2+2 model – what an opportunity…...

The Body
Although totally rust free, it’s not flawless…..the paint is Jaguar’s original Sable Brown, most of which looks as if it was applied when new. It is completely straight, with a good fit on all of the panels – no evidence of having ever been hit.

The nose is in truly perfect condition, and the only negatives on the entire body are what we can best describe as “storage dings.” It seems likely that the long term storage, with other items placed on and around the car, is what has led to a handful of small dings and dents primarily on the top of the bonnet and the roof – our assessment is that these could likely be pulled out, simply because the paint surface in these areas is entirely intact.

Apart from a scratch on the left front fender, the only noticeable area where the paint is affected is on the right-hand side, where it appears as if it has been “rubbed off” during storage. From a distance the paint looks pretty good – Todd has worked his magic here, bringing back the luster following those 20 years of storage. You’ll also see we’ve included some photographs of both front floor areas – not only with zero rust, but still featuring Jaguar’s Red Oxide Primer from 35 years ago. Similarly we’ve given you photographs of other areas so prone to rust on these cars – notably the underneath of the front fenders and the mounting points for the bonnet.

Apart from a small ding here and there, the chrome is absolutely magnificent – no sign of pitting or rust anywhere. The rubber body seals throughout are original and therefore in need of replacement. So far as we can tell the only body piece missing from the whole car is the chrome strip across the top of the windshield, while the missing back-up lens will be replaced prior to the new owner taking delivery of the car.

The Interior
The interior on this car illustrates the only downside with most classics from California..... Although "all there," this car needs new carpets and seat leather - In fact the original front floor carpets have disintegrated with age, but everything else is original, albeit 35 years old. It features its original AM/FM push-button radio, but you'll need a new antenna.

The door panels are in exceptionally nice condition, and are unmistakably the original Cinnamon which was commonplace on Sable Jaguars from the late 60’s and early 70’s. The dash top is also original and that too should be replaced – easily achieved, at minimal expense. We’ll be fitting a new gear knob in the next few days, and the only other interior area needing attention that comes to mind is the stay for the rear hatch door.

Essentially the whole interior can be retrimmed most inexpensively – if you’d like our own Trim Shop to carry out the interior refurbishment, we’ll be happy to provide an estimate for the successful bidder – there’s many original Jaguar color options, many of which are more exciting than the current color combination.

The Mechanicals
This is where we’ve saved the new owner considerable expense. As mentioned earlier, our original brief was to “get it running” – an interesting challenge after 20 years of inactivity, but once again Todd worked his magic.

Much of the work was carried out before an attempt was made to turn the engine over. This included removing and acid washing the gas tank; fitting several new hoses and a fuel pump; fitting a new water pump and two new fuel filters; disassembling and rebuilding both carbs; rebuilding the clutch master cylinder and fitting a new slave cylinder, etc. As a result, the car not only runs and drives, but stops as well…..However we haven’t given any attention to the brakes which will likely need overhauling.

Although in need of a replacement exhaust system, the engine runs remarkably well, seemingly without any smoke whatsoever. The oil pressure maintains a steady 20-25 lbs. at idle, rising to a healthy 40 lbs. pressure at 2500 RPM.

We haven’t given any attention to the suspension, although all considered, this E-Type handles very well albeit on its 20+ year old original specification Dunlop SP radial tires! The chrome wire wheels look to be in truly superb condition; no rust, and will look even nicer once the new owner has patiently cleaned many years of dirt build-up at the bottom of the spokes.

These comments on the mechanical aspects of this car are limited to the areas which received our specific attention within our original brief of resuscitating this car from hibernation. This should not imply that faults are to be found in any other mechanical areas, but other than routine checking that would naturally follow from 20 years of non-use, we have no reason to believe any major faults exist – even though we cannot guarantee it.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
