This 1969 Jaguar XKE is a Series II coupe that is said to have remained with the same family for over 30 years and is powered by a replacement 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car is finished in red over a black interior and equipped with a push-button radio, PerTronix ignition, dual Stromberg carburetors, exposed headlights, four-wheel disc brakes, and 15” knock-off wire wheels. Mechanical recommissioning was carried out in 2019 following over a decade in storage and included rebuilding the alternator, refreshing the brakes, and replacing the steering rack. This Series II XKE is being offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with manufacturer’s literature, receipts from the work in 2019, and a clean Illinois title in the owner’s name.

Originally finished in green, this example underwent a repaint in its current shade of red approximately three decades ago. Corrosion on both rocker panels is noted by the seller, and various scratches, paint chips, and areas of chrome pitting.

Polished 15” wire wheels are secured with knock-off spinners and mounted with 185-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rears, and pitting and corrosion are visible on the wheels. The seller states that the spare, jack, and tool kit are missing. Work performed in 2019 included rebuilds of the front brake calipers, as well as replacement of the following components:

Brake master cylinder and fluid reservoirs

Brake pads and hoses

Brake fluid level sensor

Front lower ball joints

Tie rod ends

Steering rack and mounts

The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in black leather with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Equipment includes a push-button radio, lap belts, and rocker switches for vehicle functions. The carpet is missing from the driver-side sill panel, the seats show wear, and corrosion is evident in the floors. The seller states that the clock and horn are inoperable.

A three-spoke steering wheel with a lace-up cover sits ahead of Smiths instruments including a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows just over 46k miles, though total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 4.2-liter inline-six features dual Stromberg carburetors and has been fitted with PerTronix ignition. The alternator was rebuilt in 2019, and the fluids, oil pan gasket, spark plugs, and ignition wires were replaced. The seller notes that there is no visible engine block stamping number.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Oil leaks are noted from the engine and transmission, and the seller also describes an exhaust leak as well as previous rust repair at the driver-side rear suspension pick-up point.

Manufacturer’s literature is included in the sale.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
