15" Knock-Off Wire Wheels

Four-Wheel Disc Brakes

Private Party or Dealer: Private Party

Lot #88450

This 1970 Jaguar XKE Series II roadster was produced in June 1970 and was reportedly acquired from its original owner by the seller in 1985. The car has been refinished in red over black leather and is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes knock-off wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a limited-slip differential, dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, Smiths instrumentation, and an aftermarket radio. Service in June 2022 included a compression test, adjusting the timing, flushing the brake fluid, and changing the oil as well as replacing the water pump, spark plugs, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, and ignition points. This XKE is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, recent service records, spare and replacement parts, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The car reportedly was repainted in its current shade of red under previous ownership. Features include wraparound chrome bumpers with overriders, a louvered clamshell hood, dual center-exit exhaust outlets, and a driver-side mirror. Pitting is noted on the bumpers and the exterior brightwork, and the convertible top has a tear above the driver door. Yellow paint is evident under chipped red paint around the manufacturer’s data plate in the driver-side door jamb. Photos depicting corrosion, chips, dents, and scratches on the car’s painted surfaces.

Chrome 15″ wire-spoke wheels secured with knock-off nuts are wrapped in Michelin radial tires, and a spare wheel stows beneath the trunk floor. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs. The left-front brake hose was replaced in June 2022, at which time the brake fluid was flushed.

The interior is upholstered in black with front bucket seats and a center armrest covered in matching leather. Appointments include a padded armrest, a locking glovebox, a passenger-side grab handle, a Smiths clock, and an Audiovox Xtra AM/FM/cassette stereo. The leather on both seats is worn and cracked, there are tears in the driver-side carpeting and threshold vinyl, and wires are exposed under the dash panel. There is pitting on the parking-brake handle and other interior brightwork, corrosion around the ashtray in the center console, and blemishes on the passenger side of the center console. The seller notes that the clock and the radio are inoperable and that the weather seal around the trunk is loose.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160-mph Smiths speedometer and a matching tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline as well as gauges for battery voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 64,500 miles, less than 10k of which were added under current ownership.

The 4.2-liter inline-six breathes through a pair of Zenith-Stromberg 175 CD-2 carburetors and produced 246 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque when new. Service in June 2022 included a compression test, a timing adjustment, and an oil and filter change as well as replacement of the water pump, spark plugs and plug wires, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, and ignition points. The compression test recorded 150 psi in each cylinder.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Corrosion is noted on the underbody.

The car is accompanied by owner’s and service manuals, recent service records, and spare parts including brake components, a fan belt, spark plugs, and assorted filters.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
