Car was at auction 8/17

Auction description:
Lot number 124
Sale Price £92,000
Make & Model Jaguar E-Type S1 4.2 Coupe
Registration HKJ 219D
Year 1966
Colour Signal Red
Engine Size 4,235 cc
Chassis No. 1E21367
Engine No. 7E8425-9
V5C; MOT July 2018 with no advisories; invoices; Heritage Certificate; handbook; period brochures etc

As the Heritage Certificate confirms, HKJ 219D is one of those original RHD Coupes and was built in early June 1966 and despatched via Pembury Car Sales of Kent to its first owner, Mr A Moon of Northiam, Sussex, who was to keep it until 1972. Originally Primrose Yellow with black trim, it has since been repainted Signal Red but still retains its original engine and gearbox making it a 'matching numbers' machine. Copies of old V5 documents on file chart all the owners to date, the vendor acquiring the car in 2011.

A large file of bills and restoration photos show that the car was extensively restored about 20 years ago and has been constantly improved and upgraded since, resulting in the magnificent car you see today. The full extent of the works carried out are too detailed to list in full here, but are amply documented in the history file. Highlights include: rebuilt diff and uprated torsion bars in 2006; full engine rebuild in 2007; new prop shaft and carburettors rebuilt in 2008; gearbox reconditioned in 2010; Hi Torque starter motor fitted in 2011; full Suffolk & Turley interior retrim in 2011 which cost over £9,500; new clutch kit in August 2013 less than 500 miles ago at a cost of £1,700. Uprated Coopercraft brakes have also been fitted along with a Kenlowe fan and a stainless steel exhaust system.

During his 7-year ownership the vendor has kept the car in a dehumidified garage and only covered some 1,500 fine weather miles, including various show appearances where the E-Type is always widely admired. Although he is not the trophy-gathering type, the vendor easily scooped the top award when he was persuaded to enter a concours event only last year. No doubt the fortunate new owner will be able to stock their own trophy cabinet with similar silverware should they feel so inclined.

Said to drive as well as it looks, the Jaguar certainly performed beautifully when we were allowed an extended test drive on the occasion of our visit, with excellent oil pressure and temperature at all times on what was a baking hot summer's day. Treated to an oil service about 50 miles ago, it has an MOT until July 2018 with no advisories recorded and also comes with an original owner's handbook, lubrication chart, two spare parts catalogues, a Haynes workshop manual, period sales brochures and road tests, original Jaguar tool kit plus the aforementioned history file and Heritage Certificate.

As good an example as we have ever offered, this fine 'matching numbers' UK-supplied Series One E-Type ticks all the right boxes and will doubtless prove more rewarding than money in the bank - in all senses of that phrase.

Please note that the personalised number shown in the photos is not included and the car will revert to its original number, HKJ 219D, prior to the sale.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
