This 1968 Jaguar XKE is a Series 1.5 roadster that was reportedly sold new in California and underwent a cosmetic refresh around a decade ago. Power is from a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and the car has been repainted dark green over tan leather upholstery. Features include a tan soft top, Sony AM/FM cassette stereo, a louvered hood, four-wheel disc brakes, and polished knock-off wire wheels. This XKE was acquired by the current owner in 2017 and is now being offered on consignment by the selling dealer with manufacturer’s literature, service records dating back to 1970, and a clean California title.
Series 1.5 XKEs featured exposed headlights shared with Series II cars but retained Series I features such as a small front grille opening, turn signals mounted above the front bumper, and taillights situated above the split rear bumper. Said to have been previously finished in Sable, this example was repainted its current shade of dark green during previous ownership. Exterior features include a tan soft top, a louvered hood, and a chrome driver’s side mirror. Areas of pitting on the brightwork are noted by the seller.
Polished 15” wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-off spinners and mounted with red stripe tires. Braking is through four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rears.
The cabin was reportedly reupholstered during previous ownership and houses seats trimmed in tan leather with matching door panels. Equipment includes a Sony AM/FM cassette stereo, a height-adjustable rear-view mirror, rocker switches for vehicle functions, and a replacement analog clock.
A wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 40k miles.
The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors and was factory-rated at 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque when new.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
Chassis number 1E18283 is listed as the VIN on the title prefix “J68.”
