This 1968 Jaguar XKE is a Series 1.5 roadster that was completed on February 6, 1968, and distributed in the US through Jaguar Cars of New York. It was refurbished several years ago and was acquired by the seller in 2017, reportedly from the second owner of over three decades. It is finished in Ascot Fawn over beige leather and is powered by a numbers-matching 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, chrome wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a Blaupunkt radio, a beige soft top, and a black tonneau cover. Service performed in 2017 included refurbishing the fuel tank and cleaning and adjusting the carburetors in addition to replacing the exhaust system, front ball joints and tie rods, cooling fans, fuel pump, brake master cylinder, and brake booster. This XKE roadster is now offered with a tool kit, owner’s manuals, a handwritten mileage log, service records, a copy of a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
Delivered from the factory in Ascot Fawn, the exterior is said to have been refinished under previous ownership. Series 1.5 XKEs received open headlights shared with Series II cars, but retained Series I features such as a small front grille opening, turn signals mounted above the front bumper, and taillights mounted above the split rear bumper. The seller reports of small paint chips and a variation in color across some of the panels. Closeups of the finish, trim, and beige soft top are presented in the photo gallery below.
Chrome 15″ wire wheels are secured by winged knock-offs and are mounted with 205/65 BF Goodrich Advantage T/A tires. A matching spare wheel is mounted under the trunk floor along with a tool kit and jack. Koni shocks are fitted at all four corners, and maintenance performed in June 2017 by Steve’s Jaguar Service of Canoga Park, California, included replacing the front ball joints and tie rod ends as well as the brake booster, master cylinder, vacuum lines, and a clutch hose. A brake fluid flush was reportedly performed in 2020.
The interior features low-back bucket seats upholstered in beige leather, matching door panels and carpets, and a black dash pad. Amenities include a heater, a center console-mounted ashtray, and a Blaupunkt radio that has been retrofitted with Bluetooth connectivity and an electric antenna. Lap belts are also fitted along with rubber floor mats.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel was sourced and installed by Steve’s Jaguar Service in 2017. The 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer are joined by gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows just under 45k miles, approximately 500 of which were added by the seller.
The 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six in Series 1.5 variants features twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and was factory rated at 246 horsepower. The fuel tank was refurbished in June 2017, at which time a new exhaust system, carburetor floats, electronic ignition, and upgraded cooling fans were installed. Various gaskets and hoses were also replaced, and more recent service is said to have included an oil change and battery replacement in September 2020.
Cylinder stamping number 7E15964-9 matches the number listed on the engine block, underhood identification plate, and the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a fully synchronized four-speed manual gearbox and independent rear end.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate lists the vehicle’s original colors, drivetrain numbers, and initial delivery in New York.
