This 1966 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was reportedly dismantled in 1978 and stored in Oregon until the seller’s acquisition in 2021. A subsequent refurbishment included media blasting and repainting the body in metallic gray, rebuilding the 4.2-liter inline-six, four-speed manual gearbox, and the rear differential, replating the brightwork, and reupholstering the interior in red leather. Equipment includes a black soft top, chrome bumpers with overriders, glass headlight covers, 15″ wire wheels, a wood-rim steering wheel, and a stainless exhaust system. This XKE is now offered with refurbishment photos and a clean Arizona title.

The 2021 refurbishment reportedly included sandblasting the bodywork and repainting it in Opalescent Dark Gray, replacing the windows, and replating the trim. Features include a black soft top, glass headlight covers, hood louvers, split front and rear bumpers with overriders, and twin exhaust outlets.

Chrome 15″ wire wheels are secured with winged knockoffs and mounted with 205/70 Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires. The car rides on four-wheel independent suspension with torsion bars up front and coil springs at the rear. Four-wheel disc brakes with inboard-mounted rear rotors were standard equipment. The rear suspension bearings and seals were reportedly replaced during the refurbishment.

The cabin has been reupholstered and features red leather seats along with matching door panels and carpets and a black dashboard. Equipment includes a center console with an armrest, a height-adjustable rearview mirror, chrome fittings, and lap belts.

The wood-rim steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock. Gauges for amperage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 40k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added under current ownership. Total chassis mileage is unknown.

The rebuilt 4.2-liter twin-cam inline-six is equipped with triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. The seller states that the engine rebuild included boring the cylinders .020″ over, grinding the crankshaft .010″ under, resizing the connecting rods, performing a three-angle valve job, and replacing the small-end bushes, valves, valve guides, springs, tappets, chains, and oil pump. A replacement wiring harness was also fitted.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt four-speed manual gearbox. The differential was also rebuilt with to 3.07:1 gearing. A stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
