Sellers description:
1967 Jaguar E-type Series 1 4.2L Roadster
This is an early 1967 Series 1, Jaguar E-type OTS (Open two seat). The build date is September of 1966 (VIN - 1E13392). It is a covered headlight car. Carmen red, Biscuit interior and top. Odo shows 87,156 miles. From the owner’s paperwork, it looks to be accurate. The numbers on the chassis, engine and gearbox match the data plate. The cylinder head number matches the engine number. The car has a clear title. It's been with the current owner for just over a year. He has restored several vintage Jags and this was to be his next restoration project, but he has his latest dream car on order and needs garage space. It had a hobbyist level restoration in the late 80's (plenty of receipts and a couple of pictures of this work).
It looks to have gotten a lacquer paint job that did not age well. Lots of chips and quite cracked throughout. It’s a “10 footer” at best. The right door has rust bubbling through the bottom of the door skin. The rockers appear solid. There is an old picture of the inner and outer rockers and supports being replaced during the late 80's resto. The floor pans and rear suspension area were all replaced with reproduction panels that were available in the late 80’s. While they don't look bad, they are not as nice as the new Robey repro panels currently available. The bonnet is in great shape. Having just gone through a complete bonnet rebuild on my E-type, and dealing with lots of bondo and hidden dents around the radiator opening, I can say that this looks to be one of the better original bonnets I have seen. The bonnet underside is smooth and the valence is undamaged. The Interior, carpeting and cloth top were all replaced in the recent past and are very nice. The top seals well and operates easily. The rear window is clear. All of the glass is in good shape. There is a matching cloth boot cover.
The engine runs well. It has strong oil pressure on start up and maintains its pressure when warm. The brakes (including handbrake) work well. The electrics all work as do the gauges (except the clock). The brake and clutch pedal are firm. The gearbox shifts well.
The engine bay could use a cleaning, but everything is as it should be for a series 1. The engine has an oil leak (surprised?). Possibly from front crank seal. The frames match the body color. I have no idea if the color is original, but the area behind the gauge panel is also red.
This is an excellent candidate for restoration as the covered headlight 1967 cars are generally considered to be the most desirable. With the addition of new tires and a more comprehensive safety inspection, you could drive it as is.
