Lot #154564

This 1966 Jaguar XKE roadster is a non-running project that was acquired by its current owner in 1967, reportedly from the original owner, and has been in storage since 2007. The car is equipped with a 4.2-liter inline-six, triple SU carburetors, a four-speed manual transmission, and a limited-slip differential as well as 15″ wire-spoke wheels, independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. It has been refinished in red with a black convertible top over black leather upholstery with low-back bucket seats and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. This XKE is now offered by the seller on behalf of his brother with operation and service manuals, parts catalogs, a hydraulic floor jack, a knock-off hammer, black rubber floor mats, a car cover, and a clean Florida title in the owner’s name.

Series I E-Types were equipped with glass-covered headlights and taillights mounted above the rear bumper. This example was previously finished in yellow and was repainted red under current ownership. Equipment includes a black soft top, a louvered clamshell hood, triple wipers, dual center-exit exhaust outlets, and chrome wraparound bumpers with overriders. Close-up photos depicting paint chips, cracks, and bubbles along with dings, orange peel, and rust can be viewed in the gallery.

Silver-painted 15″ wire wheels are secured by branded two-eared knock-offs and mounted with older 215/70 Dunlop D65 Touring Elite thin-whitewall tires, and a matching spare with a Pirelli tire is stowed in the trunk. The car is equipped with rack-and-pinion steering, and braking is handled by four-wheel discs, the rears of which are mounted inboard.

Black leather upholstery covers the low-back bucket seats, which are accompanied by a color coordinated center console, door panels, and black carpets. A Sony AM/FM/cassette stereo is mounted ahead of the shifter, which displays a torn boot and a cracked knob.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160-mph Smiths speedometer and a matching tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline and an inset clock. A Lucas ammeter and Smiths gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level are positioned in the center dashboard above a row of toggle switchgear. The five-digit odometer shows 68k miles, approximately 43k of which were added by the seller.

The 4.2-liter inline-six was factory rated at 265 horsepower and features a cast-iron block with two sets of three siamesed bores, an aluminum cylinder head, double overhead camshafts, triple SU HD8 sidedraft carburetors, and a dual exhaust system. The engine has not started for 17 years, and the seller notes that no battery is present and the oil and fuel system will require service.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Laycock clutch, a full-synchromesh four-speed manual gearbox, and a Powr-Lok limited-slip differential with a 3.07:1 final gear ratio. Corrosion is noted on underbody components, including rust-through in the floorboards.

The car is accompanied by repair, operation, and service manuals as well as parts catalogs, a hydraulic floor jack, a Thor knock-off hammer, black rubber floor mats, and a car cover.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
